Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open XML technology for real-time communication, which powers a wide range of applications including instant messaging, presence and collaboration.

XMPP is federated, which means that multiple XMPP servers can talk with each other. A user on 404.city can easily talk to someone on skyn3t.in. If you want to talk to someone on 404.city you don't need to create another account on it.
